As part of the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s (George Osborne) new budget, it appears that games developers have come off rather well, getting new tax breaks as the government attempts to keep the games industry growing. Osborne even went so far as to say that he was aiming to turn the country into “Europe’s technology centre” – which would be nice enough for us Brits!
The new tax breaks have been estimated to generate £283 million ($448.4 million) for the industry itself as well as providing the government with (as opposed to losing it) £172 million ($272.6 million) more as the industry is predicted to expand.
I personally can’t wait to see what the UK games industry decides to do with its extra money though – especially as this tax break looks to affect big industry names such as Lionhead, Crytek and Jagex. Hopefully you’ll be seeing even more awesome games coming out of the UK sometime soon!
