We’ve had a bit of a back and forth with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 news in the past months. After we found out that GSC Game World was shutting down, a ray of hope came straight from the disenfranchised developers. Work on the game was continuing regardless of their studio problems.
Now we can happily report that the developers have formed a new studio by the name of Vostok Games. Thats not all, though the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series has ended, Vostok Games are working on a spiritual successor called Survarium.
Here’s what we know about Survarium so far:
- Free-to-play MMOFPS
- New proprietary Vostok Games engine
- Post-catastrophic environment
- New species of wildlife and plantlife “purposely destroy human civilization.”
Apparently, man versus nature will take on a whole new meaning in this game. Here’s a good explanation from the project lead, Ruslan Didenko:
“The concept of Survarium is a next evolution step for the idea of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. we’ve been working on for the last ten years. Survarium will go way further forcing mankind to fight for survival not only within the closed area of Chernobyl zone, but also far beyond.”
Lead Game Designer Aleksey Sytianov says that Survarium will pit certain forces against each other, “Technology versus nature, rational versus mystical. Such a confrontation enables us to take a new look at the current happenings in our world.”
Scratch what I said earlier. It sounds like Survarium will be more than a spiritual successor. Vostok Games is looking to offer the scavenger gameplay that fans expect, along with the promise of an overarching threat. An MMOFPS like this sounds quite ambitious, though I will admit that I don’t like the sound of it being free-to-play.
But why the name change? The team tweeted that money wasn’t the problem, “We were not able to secure the IP rights and thus unable to continue development.”
Survarium is planned to release for PC at then end of 2013.
