New Super Mario Bros. 2 will have DLC

Mario games have been around for a while, in many different forms and with a variety of features. Nintendo is planning on implementing a not so revolutionary feature for the game franchise, paid DLC.

The latest Mario game, New Super Mario Bros. 2, seems to place a heavy emphasis on coins. Part of this emphasis manifests itself in the form of the Coin Rush mode. The mode consists of gamers playing through three randomly selected levels quickly, trying to gather as many coins as possible before the time limit runs out. The coins will form a high score system of sorts for players to use in order to boast about their skills and challenge others.

The DLC that Nintendo will be releasing for New Super Mario Bros. 2 revolves around coins as well. In fact, the DLC will be new Coin Rush levels for gamers to play. The new levels have not been created yet, as the developers won’t be working on them until after the game launches.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime had this to say:

“I can’t say how or when we’ll be releasing these stages since they haven’t been made yet. But we’re excited about the possibilities that online connectivity provides for helping players get more out of the games that they already love the most.”

I guess we’ll just have to wait for the first DLC to decide whether or not this Nintendo move is a success or a bust. New Super Mario Bros. 2 will launch on July 28, 2012 in Japan, August 17 in Europe, and August 19.
