Wii U’s Online Service will be Free

Nintendo LogoNintendo recently had its annual shareholder’s meeting, revealing several bits of news for gamers. Although nothing earth-shattering was revealed, there were a few choice tidbits.

The biggest revelation was that the Wii U’s online service will be free. CEO Satoru Iwata explained that, although a paid subscription service isn’t a bad idea, he thinks that it’s more important to allow everyone to be able to access Nintendo’s Miiverse, so that word of mouth can produce more hardware and software sales.

At the meeting, Iwata also said that there are currently no plans to make any additional 3DS models after the XL. He said that too many choices would be confusing to customers and mass production may become less efficient. The only reason the 3DS XL was made was because there was a desire for a large screen.
