Dead Space 3 is on the way and EA has seen fit to release the first official gameplay video/developer talk/marketing nonsense thing.
The video begins with the single player action that we’ve all come to know. The HUD is still as minimal and awesome as ever. The necromorphs still die once you slash up their limbs, although the new one seems to be more resilient than normal.
Then there’s the new co-op gameplay, which Executive Producer Steve Papoutsis says is completely optional. You know, like a bonus that single player guys never have to experience.
It looks like good harmless fun!
But the key word there is harmless. As in, diecast fans have expressed concern over the general lack of horror and the encroaching cover-based gameplay. The part-shooter, part-horror duality reminds me of the F.E.A.R. series actually. We’ll have to see when the full game is unleashed.
Honestly, I like the look of the game and I’m looking forward to trying it out. What are your thoughts?
Dead Space 3 is slated for release February 2013 on PC, PS3 and the 360.

It really is a shame that EA/Visceral have essentially marginalized the Horror aspect of the Dead Space series as it has progressed. Reviews of the second games often mentioned that the player feels “too powerful”, which is not conducive whatsoever to instilling fear.
As a fan of the original Dead Space, that was enough to keep me from purchasing the sequel. If DS3 is more of the same, then I won’t be purchasing it either. At least there have been some decent Horror-themed indie games in recent years, such as Amnesia and Slender.
