Steam Officially Coming to Linux

The possibility of Steam on Linux has been kicked around for some time. At long last, that possibility is going to become a reality.

A team was created with the purpose of bringing Steam and Left 4 Dead 2 over to the Ubuntu operating system. Ubuntu was chosen for several reasons, including its popularity among the gaming and development communities. The team has been successful with Ubuntu so far and will look to expand into other operating systems in the future. Once they managed to port Left 4 Dead 2 over to Ubuntu, Valve’s interest in the team grew and the company lent them its support.

The team’s next goals are as follows:

  • Getting the Steam client onto Linux with full functionality
  • Optimizing a version of L4D2 running at a high frame rate with OpenGL
  • Porting additional Valve titles

They’ve already gotten Steam to work on Ubuntu, but are looking to improve it and then add more games. This team isn’t satisfied with mediocre either. They want the games running as well on Linux as they do on Windows.
