Team Fortress 2 Introduces Mann vs. Machine

A huge Team Fortress 2 (TF2) update is in the works and is due to be playable on August 15, 2012. The update has been called Mann vs. Machine, or “mvm.” This is Day 1 of a 3 day information release on the update, so keep that in mind. This is likely introductory, and there is a lot more information coming in the next 2 days.

Anyone who follows TF2 a reasonable amount knows that this update has been rumored for roughly a year. Valve is known to put all kinds of easter eggs throughout their updates. Check out this video for a good summary on all the things fans have uncovered so far. This has been one of the great Valve conspiracies and a lot of people must feel validated today.

Anyway, onto the update! The update includes a new map, and MvM opens up a whole new way of playing TF2 that is unlike anything else in the game. It is called TF2 Co-op and it allows you and up to 5 friends, a total of 6 people, to team up together and take on waves of robots. You must stop the robots from getting bombs to a Mann Co. facility and blowing it up. The description also says this, “Take advantage of breaks between waves to upgrade your abilities and weapons. Survive all the waves in any of a variety of missions to earn incredible loot.” Hmm, I see item farming in the future.

Did I mention the robots are robot versions of the 9 different classes? Yeah, pretty cool, check out the intro video below.

There are a few versions of robots for classes, so far it seems. I don’t know if this is complete information, but it is likely not. For example, there are two types of Medics, the Quick Fix medic, and the Uber Medic. The versions seem to all play off of different ways you could play your own class.

In addition to that, there are two new kinds of things we haven’t seen before. First, are giant robots, that are as they suggest, giant versions of the 9 classes. So far they have only discussed three kinds, the Rapid Fire Soldier, which has “the machine gun of rocket launchers,” the Deflector Heavy, which “can shoot down projectiles such as rockets and grenades,” and finally there is the Super Scout, which moves “lightning fast,” unlike the other giants which walk at half the speed of normal robots.

The other new bots featured are called Sentry Busters. And just like the name suggests, they seek out sentries and then run up to them and blow them up. But, it takes them a few seconds to blow up, so the Engineer can move his sentry if he is quick enough.

It seems as though TF2 has a new Left 4 Dead mode, but with robots. To learn more about the lore (yes TF2 has lore) and see some of the stuff for yourself, go here.
