Uncharted 3 has been updated to version 1.13 today, bringing a host of new additions to multiplayer. The update includes an extra 50 Trophies, 137 pieces of DLC and, most significantly, the new Tournament mode.
The Tournament mode allows players to take part in Team Deathmatch, Hardcore and Three-Team Deathmatch tournament games. Players can enter these tournament games using one of ten tickets that players are awarded each week. You are given points based on your individual performance that contribute to your ranking. However, you must be on the winning team in order to be awarded any points.
Points are culminated at the end of the week, and if you have earned enough points, you will be placed in one of three tiers that include rewards such as weapon skins, mods and costume pieces.
This is also where the microtransaction system comes into play. If you would like more than the original ten tickets, you can purchase more from the PlayStation Store. Items that can be won in the Tournament mode can also be purchased through microtransactions.
What do you think of Naughty Dog’s update to their huge franchise? I think that Naughty Dog’s inclusion of microtransactions has meant that I have lost a bit of respect for the company. I have always been impressed be the high production value and overall quality of their titles, but I feel that a lot of people are going to look at Naughty Dog slightly differently after today.

As a pretty big fan of the Uncharted series, I have to say this does irk me. My only thought is: “Get your multiplayer out of my single player game, Naughty Dog!” The let’s-add-multiplayer-to-story-driven-single-player-games craze is bad enough. Now they’re adding microtransactions? That can only be interpreted as a money-grabbing ploy.
I really don’t think they are going to make enough from the ticket sales for this to just be a money-grabbing ploy. That’s a lot of content and just shows how willing Naughty Dog is to back the multiplayer part of Uncharted 3.
The weekly Tournament system sounds great. Hot Shots Golf World Invitational did something similar and that was my favorite part of that game.
Somehow, I just KNEW you’d be the one to pop up and contradict me, John.
Agreed. And with The Last of Us poised to be a critical and financial success if you believe the hype, then why would they need to implement something like this?
