Nintendo is often mocked for being the company that’s for the casual gamer. The Wii only furthered that notion, with its ability to appeal to a wide range of players. Now, with the Wii U, Nintendo seems poised to continue its wide-range-of-gamers approach, but by attempting to draw the hardcore gamers back in. This can be seen in the Xbox-style controller revealed earlier, and now, seemingly, in one of its launch titles, ZombiU.
The goal for Ubisoft Montpellier, the developers of ZombiU, has been to create a challenging game, according to NowGamer. International product manager Nicolai Bouchai explains:
“We know there are a lot of gamers expecting a lot with the Wii U, so that’s why we want to deliver this experience and dedicate it to the gamers.”
Interestingly enough, the developers seem to have taken inspiration from the notoriously challenging games, Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. In ZombiU, players will be able to leave messages and hints for other players via the Wii U GamePad and in-game room-scanning ability. This note-leaving system is prevalent throughout the aforementioned Souls games.
In ZombiU, players will often die multiple times in order to figure out how to survive specific areas and looting an area will become necessary to move on. A final way the game aims to challenge players is a mode called “Survival Mode,” which is unlocked once players beat the game. In Survival Mode, players will only have one life and one character with which to beat the game.
This game gets more and more interesting to me as new information comes out. What do you think? Are you up to the challenge?
