That game that Obsidian was teasing on its website? Yeah, it looks like the speculators weren’t too far off with the guess about “Eternity” being in the title. The new game has been revealed to be “Project Eternity” (working title), and Obsidian Entertainment is looking for funding on Kickstarter. Obsidian describes the game as “an old-school styled CRPG for the PC, reminiscent of the Infinity Engine games (Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment).”
The game is set in a fantasy world with magic, which is “connected to the souls of the people that are using it.” In fact, much of the game’s story revolves around the concept of the soul and how important it is. Furthermore, the developers are not afraid of a mature rating; in fact, they’re embracing it as a chance to explore deeper, more mature themes.
The combat is “a tactical real-time with pause system,” and the world map is full of places to explore. As with many other Obsidian games, the central character and his or her companions will be a central focus of the game. Rich dialogue coupled with the challenge of facing many, difficult decisions will shape the course of your story.
So why Kickstarter? The developers explain:
“We have wanted to go back to our roots and create an epic PC role-playing game adventure for years. But, it’s been almost impossible to get funding through traditional methods for a game like this. The great thing about Kickstarter is that we can go directly to the people who love to play RPGs as much as we love to make them. Plus, we don’t have to make compromises with a publisher. We make the development decisions, we market the game, and we don’t have to answer to anyone but you – our fans.”
Plus, Kickstarter will allow the developers to let players see in greater depth the development of the game as it progresses.
I think it’s a little silly for a developer like that to go to Kickstarter, but then again, I guess they can, so why not? Check it out for yourself here, and then sound off in the comments below.
