The team that’s been working on bringing Steam to Linux has been chugging along ever since their official announcement a while back. Now it seems they’re ready to begin some real testing.
On a blog post, the team revealed that they’ll be doing an internal beta next week, and a “private external beta for 1,000 users in October.” Linux users will be able to sign up for the external beta, but details on the process have not yet been released. The beta will include:
- Steam
- One Valve game
- Support for Ubuntu 12.04 and above
Additional Valve games will not be supported, nor will the Big Picture mode. Players who have already purchased Left 4 Dead 2 will not see any effect on their chances of getting into the beta. The team plans to use the beta to test as wide a range of computer hardware for Linux as possible.
