Red Barrels have released their trailer for Outlast, fittingly enough on All Hallow’s Eve, along with a release period of Summer 2013. The game is being developed by a team of ex-Ubisoft staff and is being released on Steam (hopefully) next year. The trailer sets up the game’s premise of exploring an insane asylum in Colorado in pursuit of uncovering a CIA conspiracy.
It seems to be a survival-horror game reminiscent of Condemned’s claustrophobic chase sequences and shuffling maniacs, and if pulled off properly might bring hope to the jaded fans of the genre. I won’t spoil the trailer but there was a section in which the character carries out a 180 degree turn whilst sprinting without any change to balance or speed, which threw me a bit. Without speculating too much, the night-vision camera aspect of the game could make for some very interesting situations.
