We all know that we’re not supposed to shut down game consoles or computers while they’re updating, but when the update is a 5 GB update that takes over an hour to complete, it certainly is tempting. But turning your Wii U off during that initial 5 GB firmware update will render it unusable, perhaps forever.
Ben Fritz, Film Business reporter for the LA Times found this out the hard way. He tweeted yesterday night:
“Warning: don’t unplug your Wii U during the 2 hour plus software update or the console stops working.”
You might feel sorry for him, be angry at Nintendo, or think that it serves Fritz right for being an idiot. Regardless, let this be a warning to all on two fronts: 1.) Before you get to use your Wii U, you WILL have to install the 5 GB firmware update that adds the Nintendo Network (which is required) to the system. 2.) Do NOT turn your Wii U off during an update or it will die.

Thankfully ours updated in less than an hour. I took a shower and watched John play a few rounds of Black Ops 2 multiplayer while I waited.
