Whilst John has covered the hardware aspects revealed yesterday in Sony’s 2013 PlayStation meeting, I would like to take the time to cover the revealed titles. Yesterday’s meeting was the formal announcement of the PlayStation 4, and although we weren’t shown the physical console, a lot of information was revealed, including upcoming titles.
Developed by Sony Studio Japan, Knack is an action platformer set in the midst of a war between humans and goblins, in which the humans create Knack, a small being with the ability to shape shift into larger or smaller versions of himself, granting immense physical abilities and stealth capabilities respectively. The game is being directed by PlayStation 4′s lead system architect Mark Cerny, alluding to the possibility of Knack showcasing the strength of the PlayStation 4′s processing power. Knack was also shown as a demonstration of the Vita’s remote play capabilities. Take a look at the video below to see the debut trailer of Knack shown at yesterday’s conference.
Killzone: Shadow Fall
Even before the conference, rumours were circulating about the existence of a new Killzone title, and this was confirmed in yesterday’s conference. Killzone: Shadow Fall was shown live, depicting the Hellghast’s struggle to fight for their right to exist. The setting was that of a city divided by a Berlin Wall-esque divide separating the warring factions. Gameplay shown featured astounding visual effects and the classic first-person actions Killzone veterans will be used to. Check out the demo below and let us know if you’re excited for the next iteration of the Killzone franchise.
Infamous: Second Son
Sucker Punch’s Infamous series also made an appearance at the event, featuring a brand new superhuman protagonist. Set seven years after Infamous 2, Infamous: Second Son follows Delsin Rowe, a so-called ‘bioterrorist’ who boasts the ability to manipulate and embody smoke. Whilst no gameplay was shown, the trailer showed a departure from the fictional cities of Empire City and New Marais for the factual setting of Seattle, in which Delsin fights against those who aim to take our freedom. The title has raised a lot of questions as to whether this new protagonist is related to Cole McGrath, the main character of the previous two titles. Hopefully more information on this title will be revealed at E3, but for now, take a look at the trailer below.
As well as showing off their new engine, code named ‘Pantha Rhei’, Capcom also announced a new title Deep Down (working title), showing the new engine in action. Scarcely any information was revealed for Deep Down, although from the trailer it appears to be a medieval-esque dragon-hunting title in which players will come up against towering beasts boasting some very toasty-looking breath. Take a look at the trailer below and see what you think.
Other Notable Announcements
In terms of other titles, it was also confirmed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Watch Dogs and Destiny will all be coming to PlayStation 4, with Destiny featuring content exclusive to the PlayStation 4 version. Also, as a tantalising teaser, Final Fantasy Brand Director Shinji Hashimoto announced that a new Final Fantasy title will debut at E3 2013, and will be coming to PlayStation 4. Whilst no footage or screens were shown of the title, it definitely gives Sony fans something to look forward to in the next few months.
